I’ll let you into a little secret...
Receiving the new season range from Minti is one of the highlights of our year at Lemon Zebra Kids. As big supporters of Australian fashion we are passionate followers of Minti and the iconic children’s wear brand it has become over the last 15 years.
Our blog this month is a little insight for our customers into what makes Minti, as well as a look at what’s coming for Winter 2018!
We chatted with Nick Joblin, Owner and Designer at Minti earlier this month to find out more.
OriginsNick and Amy Joblin started Minti in 2003. Nick, who was working as a graphic designer in the streetwear market at the time saw a gap in the market:
“A lot of streetwear retailers would ask us to do a kids’ brand. We didn’t really know what kids would want, so we created clothes we liked and thought they would wear.”
They started off small, testing the market with just a few prints on tees, hoodies, jumpers and building from there. Relocating from NZ to Melbourne in 2008 the business went from strength to strength - Minti now has around 300 different pieces in their collection each season!
Influences and inspirationThe Minti range with its strong, distinctive prints are all based on original artworks designed to be quirky and unconventional as well as cool.
“Our ranges are heavily based around the artwork we have done in the time leading up to sampling – Amy and I try and draw all year round and then put our ranges together based on our favourite drawings.”
“For our styles, we always just try and make comfortable pieces that look cool. We don’t focus on ‘what’s in fashion’ and just try and put pieces out that we feel we would want to wear if we were small.”
Add to this the culture, music and art scene of Melbourne as well as their own growing family and you get that distinctive and oh so wearable Minti look.

“We’ve always just designed things that we think we’d like to wear (if we were small of course).”
What’s comingNew styles for Autumn / Winter 2018 are here and we are really excited by what we have seen so far. As always edgy street style and striking prints are front and centre, and you can expect to see:
- Boys: strong, character led prints, tees and trackies in washed blues, greys and rust.
- Girls: nature inspired prints, soft tones, long lines - and we love the winter tutu!
There is an enduring emphasis on comfort and wearability at Minti too, something that appeals to both children and parents - and much of the collection is non-gender specific with prints to captivate all.
